I was thinking that its really, really hard to know whats around you in PM. Unless you're in a city with specifically marked streets and everything, its very easy to get turned around. So I was thinking that we (refs) could post maps on the main page of our planet's. They wouldn't be very detailed, but they'd give you a general idea of your surroundings. No names of anything, but it'd show streets and roads, etc.

Maps are cool. You could make them public like you said or make them an in-game item. Perhaps you start with a map of your starting planet, or could buy one. Hell even buy sections of the map. Could be a quest. Whatever the ref can think of.

Yeah, I was gonna post the idea of letting players buy maps, but I didn't want to post it and give ideas away if we didn't make that 'official' :) But yeah, they could start out with a map of the town/city/area they start in, and they can buy new maps for different places, more details, etc.

I like the idea of having a map just because that would make it a lot easier to see where I am going. Whether I have to buy the map or if you only receive certain areas when you go to certain places (i.e. exploring) doesn't matter to me but it would be nice to at the very least see where I've been.

Yeah, I'm thinking you get portions of the map as you go, and if you purchase a map it'll show names of things, like cities, etc.

I don't know, I think having maps might take away from the exploring and discovery aspect of the game. If you want a map as a player you should make one of your own in your head or on paper. I've got one rolling around in my skull.

Problem is all this IT and fly business, going to people you've been to, but having no idea where they actually are in relation to anything else.

I agree with a map showing the general landmarks and towns, but no roads or labels.

I like the idea of a map. doesnt have to be too detailed.

If its not to much to ask and/or too much work maybe put each persons map in their members page.

Yeah, that wouldn't be a problem. Or just have a link on their member page that goes to their map, which might work better if they have more than one map.

Good point
would it be done in sections as you go or more like chunks?

I want a map to the Pirate treasure!

I'm thinking Everyone starts with either an overall map of the continent they're on (maybe the whole planet), or just a map of the city/town they start in. Either way, it wouldn't have names of locations or anything, just a general guide. You could then go to some sort of shop and buy a new map that had specifics, etc.

to that question when you join you could add 'explorer' which will have some, most or all locations revealed... maybe not in detail but it would have to be somewhat worth it compared to the other answers.

I like that idea of at least starting with a layout, even if you don't have specifics down. Just helps me visualize. And I would think that as you explore a place the specifics would be revealed and your map would be updated? Or you could have the option as people have previously mentioned of buying a map and then you have all the locations for a certain area revealed.

The way this would work in my head is that a player could get a blank map in a jpeg file as a reward or something early on. You could buy portions of the map at shops or find them as loot and you would essentially fill in your own map as you go.

Still like the ideas of maps, but what I don't want to see is some maps getting more details for exploring areas than others. Keep it simple like an overhead view of the square planet. I guess it doesn't matter really. I just think players that bug the ref for more details will be rewarded, which is something I don't like.
