The Ztark Classic was a lot of fun, and I would love to see us announcing monthly tournaments someday! I don’t know when the next tourney will be, hell I don’t even know if there will be another one! I just wanted to see if there were any rules or ideas or style that the players would prefer. Another like last time, a classic 1v1, everyone in 1 spot free-for-all? So post away, what kind of tournament should we have next? Ideas welcome!
Oh, and here is the topic we have been having about the last tournament:
Monthly? Too much. Quarterly would be more reasonable.
Id like to see elimination style with a round robin. Get to fight atleast twice before being eliminated. Lets the folks eliminated early on have a shot at redemption
Thanks for the comment! Just curious, any reason why not more frequently? I think we can knock a more typical tournament out in a day, two max. Wouldn’t even have to stop your normal updates from ref. We could announce once a month, but it’s not for another 2-4 weeks, have a set day and/or times for a weekend where we all meet up in chat to get our matches done, skip if someone can’t make it. I thought we had a lot of success doing that in the past, and PMCS makes it 100x easier nowadays.
We would definitely need to downplay the role playing and just get down to the action, matches shouldn’t take more than 30-45 minutes each. If we get 2-3 refs all doing matches for the first rounds, I think at this size we could have the entire tourney done in 1 go, maybe 3 hours? 4 with a couple breaks? Definitely a fun planned Saturday afternoon or something.
You can easily x5 to x10 your PL in a month.
In the past we have mainly said previous winners can’t enter again, or perhaps we only let them enter a bigger quarterly tourney?
Just exploring options on how we can make it happen.
I think the last tournament was incredibly involved and definitely acted as a nice aside while we waited for the main campaign to get back on the rails. But I agree with Majin, unless there was some modifier that made combat quicker, I don’t really think it would be feasible to have monthly tournaments.
An idea for a tournament I had (for the next one we inevitably have) is to do it coliseum style. All of spawn in a “prison cell” or something similar and we get one interaction per day that can yield items. And a random two competitors are selected each day to fight with a random stage modifier. Would totally love to flesh this idea out more!
Voice would be cool to speed fights up, even in the normal game. I’m not sure if anyone has taken fights outside of emails this round yet, to a discord chat or something to speed fights up.
Have an idea for one tournament, although it doesn’t work as good with our current number of members (would have been great in the day), to have separate divisions in a tourney sometimes, those that have never died competing against each other on Earth, and a separate division for anyone that has died at least once, perhaps King Kai invites only his students to an other world tournament.
The idea is that those who have trained with King Kai are always extra strong, and should be competing with each other, while the players that haven’t died can compete on a more level playing field.
It’s easy to say, “Seeee, a Namek won the tourney, they need a nerf!” but if said Namek had died and Trained with KK, they should have a major advantage and win. Balancing races can be difficult when ones that have been to KK should be ahead of the game.
Characters can pick pre-made characters designed after Cell, Goku, Frieza, Vegeta, Majin Buu, Gohan etc.
It would implement a minor balancing aspect as well as let you utilize some moves you may have never used. And… it could be set up as a Matrix or VR implemented Tournament so it meshes with the high technology of the world of PM.
The problem with doing this is the movelist within PlanetMado is a closely guarded secret.
The move name itself, and the ‘what it does’ isn’t supposed to be learned without the progression of PM’s game itself.
However, I have an idea around this. The Idea of PM HOF’s tournament system is to adopt a sudo movelist inspired by the real one from PM. However, to include some mechanics and concepts not admitted into the real game.
…something of an experimental and/or testing ground for new ideas.
Example: I’m not a fan of our current signature move system. Part of me wants to make this system truely unique; where a player proposes what his signature move does, advocates for the mechanics… and a ref judgement to determine tweaks, balance… once agreed; admitted to the game.
For a funzies tourny… I’d probably use this mechanic to build out moves that perhaps ‘Goku’ should know, allowing me to bypass the ‘pm secret’ requirement. So instead of me vulturing moves from a secret list, our own are used for the moment.
I love both of those ideas! Almost use it as a PM “What If…?” for the moves and characters, completely made up, bonus effects, whatever you want! While the point is to just have fun, a good idea may even catch on and make it into the real game in some way/shape/form. Go for it!
