Definitely the most unique tourney PM has ever had! You guys were still able to get it done in a timely manner as well, well done!

Thank you Mado & Seifer, and Dalun for getting us here. Great job to everyone that entered!

The MC Dragon stuff was a lot of fun thematically. It allowed us to maintain a large sense of public information, without giving away the complete full story 24/7. Like exact PLs, or sometimes the area of effects.

PLs is an interesting topic; while we might not of given away the PL information, we were fully aware of the communication meta that happens within PM. Similar with the Area Of Effects on each location. Part of the fun. Leaned into that.

I am certain this also triggered conversations between players within the meta-verse, where some players didn’t often chat. I like to think we created some friendships.

We respected the players when they utilized RP elements such as hiding their actions from MC Dragon, or cameras. Sometimes outright destroying the cameras. This sort of RP was rewarded and respected most, if not all times.

Side note; a lot of the things said… hilarious.

Reno and I had a side conversation about the time required to conduct the fights:

The functionality of the fights is easier than ever. But still time-consuming overall. The biggest crunch now is the human element.

Waiting for players to choose an attack, ref response to queue a defense, the opposing player to choose a defense, and the ref summary of events.

RP is highly sought after, so each response took precious time.

In some conditions, a sidebar discussion was had prior to action choices. Often, it was a private conversation before an actual action was chosen.

The human element costs time. Both sides; attacker, defender, ref-queues(like; your turn to choose a defense), and ref summary of events.

I look forward to getting the option released to the players: Do you want to do the fight entirely within PMCS, or have it reff’ed? Not all fights in PM need to be super juicy roleplay… some fights are fairly procedural.

Might be worth it to start releasing PMCS for smaller “fodder” fights.

e.g. you’re taking on two goons tonight who’s total PL doesn’t = 1/4 of your PL. Use PMCS for this fight and report/screenshot the result or whatever that looks like.

Larger fights? Like PvP and big story beats? I think those should still be reffed. Lots more potetnial RP in those fights and refs can reward “cooler” actions like what we saw in Ztark.

Having an item in-game similar to the crystal viewer could be cool. It doesn’t give you full access to a fight, but you get glimpses of what’s happening. Like if you were within x-number of tiles from a fight, you can feel the crystal vibrate to give you glimpses of the combatants.

So you would only receive an update as the fight starts to see who is fighting, maybe one moment from the fight and then the result. IDK how useful that’d be but it’d be a nifty little thing that is simialr to the Kai’s orbs or the orb that Babidi uses.

In development… waiting on a website backup so I can draw the API lines(read; connectors) between Planetmado.com and PMCS.

As soon as we get that… we’re about 2-3 weeks away from “linked fights” from occurring.

edit:
When I reffed a fight, I needed Mado to message me the PLs, Items, and Moves. But once the APIs/connectors are drawn+connected… this will be a requirement of the past.

I dunno if I support a “overworld crystal viewer” sort of mechanic. But I would be a big supporter of something similar to a monthly or bimonthly “the story so far” recap from the planets ref.

Food for thought.

I’ve been trying to keep my thoughts on MC Dragon and Crystal Viewer separate.

MC Dragon - Amazing! This guy is hilarious, totally fits for a tourney, absolute gold. We have to see him again!!!

Crystal Viewer - It was great to have a spiced up recap story of what happened. I really think the whole tournament should be added to the stories section on website. Really good stuff!
The one thing I really missed was all of us hanging out together in a chat for a tournament, watching it together, cheering our boys on live, learning from each other. That sense of our PM community coming together hanging out. I think in a more traditional world tournament, in a ring, in front of all the other participants ringside and non-participants in the stands, that makes a lot more sense. The design of this tourney being more Battle Royale style, a mix of tourney and the real game, really doesn’t want every action broadcasted when you’re trying to be sneaky. The Crystal Viewer was absolutely necessary for this type of tournament, and really the overall recap should be in every tournament! It’s nice where you could have the fights take place just bare bones, “kick, block, ki blast” but then have it turned into so much more for the recap story. And for anyone that is busy or can’t make it to the live tournament, there’s always the cool Crystal recap.

How much are you willing to reveal now that the tourney is over? Specifics of what the different zones did, and what strategic actions players took during the tournament, items found on map, etc. Basically everything but not PL’s or anything of course. Didn’t make sense during tourney, but now that it’s over, and it really doesn’t translate back to real game…

Let us start with the Ref Notes on the different zones. Willing to share quite a bit here.

Getting ahead of this one question; One of my favorite moments was the destruction of C1: The Time Dialated Cavern. The simultaneous strike from 3 different locations was a piece of interesting meta-coordination.

This wasn’t something we had expected to be utilized as a strategy; blow up a location when getting land-locked.

After considerable conversation, it was decided to give these locations a set PL similar to that of the Moon for mechanics purposes and some dice chance rolls. Cool zany concept & strat.

Very cool!

One thing I did find hard to follow along during the tourney is where everyone was in conjunction to each other. As a viewer, the different platform names, and even the names “c1” and stuff, didn’t really give me a visual of where people were moving around. Couldn’t really appreciate or understand what was really going on, was just waiting for another fight.

Sorry for that being confusing. We can chalk that up to the disconnect between the 3 technologies and time constraints. If we had better time, I would have liked to of reduced the tech count.

3 technologies being Planet Mado Tournament Characters on the website, which showed a map. Then there was PMCS itself. And lastly, email.

Here was the grid player map handed out for the rules.

Edit: The player map visible within the character profile pages had nice images as hints. This worked out nicely too.

Reno in PM’s mentioned something about the Jungle.

Glad to see players caught onto this arena function. This area had some inverse rules (instead of a 25% chance to evade a challenge, you had a 75% chance. Instead of a 25% of an early action, you have a 75% chance. Killing animals was a great source of food post-fight to restore PLs).

Here is a fun tidbit: Challenges. We didn’t want people to necessarily feel like they had to open with an attack to trigger combat, like in the normal world. They still did this, but it was interpreted as a challenge; which required an opponent to accept that challenge.

First one to attack/do-something is always paramount in PM. For “First Strike” aka initiative aka turn order… a d20 was rolled for every fighter. However, if you were there the longest… when it came to your initiative roll; we rolled that d20 twice, and took the highest result.

Now that the tournament is over and none of this translates back to the normal game, there is something I am curious about. What were all the items found on the map, where/how, and by whom? Also, were there any items not found, where and how? Thanks!

@Mado

I am the most upset that I never really got to take advantage of my 1.2x Pl gain from the stormy spires! >:(

The items were random, and each spot on the tournament map had one item drop per day for the first week or so. I don’t remember a lot of the specifics because I was just adding the items on the map for players to pick up, but there was dragon armor, saiyan armor, grenades, food, sensu beans, saibaman seeds, and maybe a sword.

I know at least one player had some EMP grenades and was asking me details on how exactly they worked…

The button & I respectfully disagree
